    Description

The Arpillera originated In Chile where groups of women known as Arpilleristas were held political prisoners during the Pinochet Regime during the military dictatorship from 1973 to 1990 of Augusto Pinochet. Women from Chile and Peru handcrafted these beautiful pieces of art. Their applique creation  was a way for them to share their sorrows and concerns. The handmade item shows daily activities in a small community in the Peruvian Andes. Detailed workmanship with textile art that is woven, sewn and embroidered with different techniques. Small items are attached to a larger cloth background. They may be scraps of fabric, felt, vinyl, thin wood pieces, straw or raffia. This work of art I have displayed shows a house, llamas, vegetables, fruit, baskets, women, children, a purse, hat and so much more with a 3 D effect. This arpillera tells a story in the woman's own way whom handcrafted this item. This applique was framed by Michaels. The frame shows wear on a corner and has other minor normal wear. There is some tears on the back of the frames paper as shown. The applique is at an angle across the top but this is the way it was crafted. The colors are more vibrant than my pictures show. Frame measurements are 22 1/2" X 13 1/2" X 1 1/2". Very beautiful folk art with a story behind it.
