    Artifact Info:
    Pre-Columbian, North West Region of Peru, Inca/Chimu wood and textile net scale, with shell inlays, date estimate 1100AD-1400AD.
    Rare wooden scale, comprised of two shallow wooden pans connected to a double-sided incised wooden beam by three thin woven textile threads. The surface of the beam is incised with a double motif of pelican-like birds on both sides. They are two pairs of birds facing each other, 4 on each side (8 incised birds total on the beam). Each bird has ancient shell inlay for the eyes.
    To the Chimu, birds signified prestige. They are never anthropomorphized, but instead appear in stylized, repeated, geometric patterns. Pelicans, in particular, were thought to have the ability to dive into the world of the ancestors, and were common decorations on Chimu artwork.

    No restoration, wood scales and beam fully in-tact.
    Artifact size: Approximately 5-3/4" x 4-1/2" x 1-1/4 inch. Size on stand: approximately 7-1/2 inch tall.
    Date estimate: 1100AD-1400AD (600-900 years old).
    Condition: Excellent patina from use on the pan interiors. Beautifully preserved incised bird motifs on the wood beam with shell eye inlays preserved. The textile string that would have been bound in the center of the beam for hanging is missing, wood pan scales in excellent condition with wear showing that this was used in ancient times. Minor nicks, chips, scrapes, scratches, patina commensurate with age.
