In Peru, the best in utilitarian and decorative ceramic art can beexhibited with legitimate pride by the "Los Reyes Ceramics" laborcommunity (founded Lima, 1954). Accredited by almost half a century of workinglife in a vital space of clay and water, the community is named in honor ofLima, city of kings. Through constant research over these years, they havecontinually applied new techniques to perfect their art - treatment of theclay, forms and designs of their own - achieving ceramics of the highestquality. Los Reyes Ceramics was founded by, and is currently directed by,Monica Fett de Benavides. She loves ceramics for a thousand reasons and, withher enthusiasm, daily awakens the inspiration of the workers whosecraftsmanship and creativity are manifest in their works.
"For raw material we use selected clays that are processed. Ourtools are the potter's wheel, a gas kiln that reaches temperatures of 1,000degrees C and, above all, the prodigious hands of our ceramist personnel. Allthe forms and sketches - primarily designs of pre-Columbian inspirationrealized from a contemporary perspective - are generated in our design section.Here, too, we determine the colors in their diverse tonalities; in addition,our designs gather iconography from other cultures of the world. I want toexplain that, while maintaining artisan techniques, our production process isunique in Lima. Before it is molded, the earth undergoes an entire process oftreatment that begins with its selection. Then it is uniformly mixed toadequate consistency and the bubbles are extracted to achieve a surface withoutporosities. Finally, this clay is compacted into solid blocks, ready to mold.Using this quality treatment of the earth, we produce entire sets of dishes andtableware, decorative plates, vases and jars, fountains and a variety ofornamental pieces. I want to emphasize that our tableware is processed withzero lead and zero cadmium, that is, completely nontoxic. As far as ourdesigns, these have to do with the sun and moon, and things of nature, allsustained in strong, brilliant colors that are expressive and cheerful. Ourconcern has always been to be in tune with current tendencies in designs, andour artisans - with the manual skill of the Peruvian, unique in Latin America -have always met these demands.
