A vintage piece of folk art that I believe is from Peru. I see similar pieces described as flutes or figurines--there IS a pierced hole on one side. This interesting piece features 6 ethnic musicians playing a variety of musical instruments, included flutes and pipes (ocarinas), as well cymbals and rattles. It appears hand-decorated, with wonderfully painted features on the faces of the musicians, and stylized designed on their clothes and hats.
The piece measures about 6 inches high and 5 inches wide at the widest part of the center. It is in fair to good condition, with a bit of wear to the design from age (see closeup photos of the light glaze flaking). Also, one pipe appears to have been broken and repaired, but I suspect this might be original to manufacture, as I don't see any evidence of glue or other repair materials (again, see closeup photo). Please note that some photos were taken in natural (ambient) light, while others used camera flash.
There is no mark I can see. I inherited this piece from a friend who traveled in Central and South America in the late 1960s and 1970s, so I believe it probably dates to that period.
