Description
Souvenir reed boat ("balsa") from the Uros Islands in Lake Titicaca, Peru. From go2peruDotCom:
The Uros call themselves Kotsuña, “the lake people”, and their origins go back to eras before the Incas. They hunt wild birds and maintain traditional fishing methods, especially those used for the carachi and the silverfish. The men are skillful handlers of the totora reed boats (called "balsas"), and the women are expert knitters.
The clothing of the two people onboard is probably made of woven alpaca or sheep wool. The boat is probably made of totora reed, the reed used to make the boats they use on the lake. The little hut on the boat has a doorway and is hollow.
